Set-aside fields are topped at least once a year but otherwise there is no disturbance to the soil other than the trampling which comes from any little posse of botanists pursuing the latest outlaws. This year a small patch of this probably introduced but very rare plant turned up on this field not having been seen in the area for as long as anyone can remember. This looks like a typical small mallow but it is easily identified because of the long rough hairs.
This plant is dotted around in central southern England but with no great concentration of records anywhere. There is little to be found in Wales, Scotland and none in Ireland.
In New Flora of the British Isles 3rd Edition by Clive Stace this plant is designated as an introduction and the name has changed to Malva setigera.
