Taking photographs of grasses often means trying to compose a green subject against a greenish background which is probably the reason why many book photos are taken in the laboratory and not in situ. This was an excellent opportunity to take a flowering plant with the neutral background of limestone. Soft-brome is quite common throughout the British isles but is also very variable. This specimen was les than 20 cm tall but it can be as much as 80 cm according to Stace.
