This western Mediterranean introduction sometimes escapes from gardens or parks and establishes itself in nearby wilderness as these plants had done. The ssp characias has dark brown glands in the cyathium (cup shaped organ in which male and female flowers are to be found).

Euphorbia characias is found mostly in southern England with little elsewehere.
