Gymnocarpium dryopteris   Oak Fern

Gymnocarpium dryopteris Pyrenees

As we looked for a site to have our usual Naturetrek picnic lunch we saw a series of stones on which people could sit under the shade of some trees. Under one of the stones was an old favourite. Arguably the most attractive of the ferns which grow in the uplands of the British Isles, Gymnocarpium dryopteris (Oak Fern) was peeping out from underneath one of the larger stones in exactly the sort of habitat that I find it in Cwm Idwal in Snowdonia.
