This is an attractive but quite variable plant which has yellow anthers dripping form the florets. The variation in appearance has led to some suggestions of various sub species which aren't yet fully accepted so this is the only species recognised by the authorities. It tends to prefer neutral or basic soils and you can find it on banks or in limestone pavement for instance. It has a scattered distribution with a slight preference for coastal sites particularly in north eastern England, eastern Scotland and the very north coast of Scotland
