Westringia fruticosa   Coast Rosemary Endemic

Westringia fruticosa whole Westringia fruticosa close

This shrub has tough rather leathery looking leaves which some think look like those of Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) hence its common name Coast Rosemary or Native Rosemary. It is tolerant of salty spray and can easily be grown in various soils so has become a favourite with gardeners for hedging plants.

Named after Johan Peter Westring, a Swedish naturalist and physician (1753 to 1833), the genus Westringia (family Lamiaceae: Mint family) is native and endemic to Australia. This species is only found on a narrow coastal strip in Eastern Australia around Sydney but is locally quite common.
