Ziziphora capitata

Ziziphora capiata whole Ziziphora capiata close

Ziziphora species are tricky to separate and this one could be Ziziphora persica but seems closest to Ziziphora capitata to my untrained eye. Ziziphora species have been used medicinally to treat cardio-vascular conditions but there are snags sometimes with using plant if a full analysis of the essential oils isn't known. In the case of this species, it contains a chemical called Pulegone which protects the plant from insect attack but is hepatotoxic to humans in that it is known to promote liver cancer.

Ziziphora capitata which is annual plant, can be found in France, Italy, Greece, Turkey Israel, Iran and the Caucasus.
