Banksia formosa Showy Dryandra Endemic
If you are not familiar with the size and spectacular nature of the Western Australian flora, then some members of the Proteaceae family could be a major surprise to you. This is one of them. With flowers larger than a large dinner plate and the tree bearing many of these wonderful blooms, seeing a Showy Dryandra for the first time could be a severe shock to the botanical system.
Some years ago now all it was suggested that Dryandra should be subsumed into Banksia and that has been accepted but taxonomists can make a scientific case for changing the Latin name but have no such authority over the common name. So it is now a Banksia but retains its common name as Dryandra and you can still join The Dryandra Study group.
Banksia formosa records are mostly in the south eastern corner of Western Australia from Bunbury southwards and eastwards to the Stirling Range.
